The diversity of St. Martin's members themselves makes this an incredibly rich community and often the main reason that people stick around. Through its almost 130 year history, St. Martin's has had only eight Rectors. The first was the Rev. John Long Jackson, who was called in 1914 and served until his election as Bishop of Louisiana in 1940. He was succeeded by the Rev. C. Alfred Cole (later Bishop of Upper South Carolina) who served Saint Martin's until 1952. The Rev. W. Moultrie Moore came to Saint Martin's in 1952 and served until 1967 when he was elected Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of North Carolina (subsequently becoming Bishop of the Diocese of Easton in Maryland).
News from the Blast
We invite you to join us, wherever you may be along your own journey of faith. It is our hope that you will find within the walls of this sanctuary a caring and warm community, the opportunity for personal reflection and mediation, and the presence of God. Pray-Disciples of Jesus have active and deep lives of prayer, both in their homes and in public. We kicked off this amazing filled week of fun and fellowship with our “stellar” themed VBS with games, activities, crafts, and music as we explored what it means to shine Jesus’ light in everyday life. Even though the outdoor weather was rainy, you would never have known it because the hallways of Saint Margaret’s were filled with the smiles and laughter of children enjoying all the activities we had to offer. A gradual decline in St. Martin's membership occurred over the next two decades.
Holy Eucharist 10:45am
These past two months have been an extraordinary time in the life of our parish and in the world. People think I’m crazy when I say this, but Lent is my favorite time of the year. I encourage you over the next few weeks, to make plans for a full Lenten journey. Set aside time for the liturgies and take on meaningful spiritual practices that will bring you closer to our Lord. Please, don’t let the pace of the culture drown out the voice of your Father calling to you. If you do your prayers, journey through the liturgies, and listen for God every day, I believe Easter will feel different for you, and the Passion of our Lord will be revealed to you in new and powerful ways.

ATTENTION YOUTH & YOUNG ADULTS
In 2003, the Vestry and Clergy of Saint Margaret’s realized that a new, bigger home was needed. At that time, the Church undertook a Capital Campaign to raise money to build a new home. In the Spring of 2005, Saint Margaret’s relocated to its current facility in Waxhaw, North Carolina. Father Todd’s first Sunday at Saint Margaret’s was August 10th, 2008.
It seems so simple, yet if we are being honest with ourselves, how much effort do we really give? I’ve noticed that within our own denomination, we spend so much time, energy, and resources on a variety of issues, but very little effort on proclaiming Christ in our culture. Those individual issues might be all wonderful causes, but they’re not the thing! If the church is not primarily about spreading the good news; if it does not bring new people to the faith, then we have lost our way.
It is the month of September, and at Saint Margaret’s, we find ourselves saying goodbye to our dear friends and members of the clergy, Fr. While I never expected these departures to occur so close together, they are a result of God’s call for each one of them. Lito+, a call to the retired life after 47 years of faithful ministry. Eric+, the exciting call to lead a congregation as its next rector. All this serves as a reminder that no matter the circumstance we find ourselves in, the story of Jesus continues to unfold in our world.
The idea to form a mission in this area originated in the Greater Episcopal Fellowship of Charlotte, an organization comprised of local clergy and lay leaders. I trust that these changes will only last for a short time, but it has influenced me, and I do not like what it has done to me. I’m more irritable, less focused, and I’m not sleeping as well as I usually do.
I thought that I had figured out my spiritual disciplines for Lent this year. The Church calls us to honor the season of Lent by…selfexamination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word. So along with deeper study and more prayer, I decided that I would abstain from coffee again this year as my discipline of self-denial. Recognizing where we put out time and energy and passion tells what we value and what we value, informs our day-to-day decisions and puts us on the path for accomplishing long term, complex goals and the desires of our heart. How we identify ourselves indicates what is most true about ourselves, what we love most, whether we see the world as a fundamentally safe or dangerous place, and how we want the world to engage with us.
Forming Our Children's Faith
After the 2019 General Convention, some 7,600 traditionalist churches across the United States — about 25% of the total number of U.S. churches — left the denomination, fearing that the tightening of the bans would not hold. The morning vote on the motion was part of a larger series of calendar items voted on in bulk. If you are looking for a church to call your own, we hope you will consider us!
Conservative advocacy groups say U.S. churches that didn’t meet the 2023 deadline should have the option of disaffiliating, too — along with the more than 7,000 that have already done so. Neighbors described watching the event unfold near their homes, some called it a war zone. Marshals Service Task Force, raced into his yard, taking cover behind a car. Monday's tragedy happened just more than 17 years after two Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers died in the line of duty. The March 31, 2007 shooting claimed the lives of officers Jeff Shelton and Sean Clark while they tried to respond to a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex. That complex was located about a mile from where Monday's shooting unfolded.
Christian formation programs for young people are nationally recognized and emulated by many other churches in the region, especially Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and Journey to Adulthood. Each prepares young people for engaged Christian lives in the twenty-first century. The youth teens participate in mission trips, outreach camps, and pilgrimages. But whether that measure maintains church unity remains to be seen. The General Conference comes as the American portion of the United Methodist Church, long the nation’s third-largest denomination, has shrunk considerably. One-quarter of its U.S. churches left between 2019 and 2023 amid conservative dismay over the church’s failure to enforce its LGBTQ bans amid widespread defiance.
One of the many things I am thankful for at our parish are the good people who have come before us, who have sacrificed so much and given us this beautiful setting in order that we might gather and worship the Risen Lord. Not only can this building not be hidden, but the witness that springs forth from its walls cannot be stopped as we strive together to follow Jesus and help build His Kingdom on Earth as it is in Heaven. In a world that is changing so rapidly, the way forward at Saint Margaret’s is to embrace the ancient disciplines of the church that have formed disciples for over two millennia. 30, yet what has sustained God’s people in their common life has been the proven traditions of worship, prayer, service, and the sharing of the Good News of Jesus.
The Rev. L. Bartine Sherman was called in 1967 and served until his retirement in 1986. The Rev. Thomas L. Ehrich was called in 1988 and served until late 1993 when he left to become the Rector of St. Paul's in Winston-Salem. In 1995, the Rev. M. Blair Both was called to St. Martin's, becoming its first female Rector. The Rev. L. Murdock Smith, PhD accepted a call to become rector of St. Martin's in May of 1999 and served until May 19, 2013. It has been too long since we gathered together, and my heart longs for the moment where we can return to our lovely church and worship together, pray together, and most importantly share together the Sacraments of the Church.
